I had a friend who just passed away. She added my name and social secuity number to her CDs and IRAs. Do those go to me or to her estate?
If you were added to the CD as a joint owner, the funds should come to you under your survivorship rights. Contact the bank and identify yourself to the bank's satisfaction, and you should be all set on that account.
As for the IRA, if your friend named you as beneficiary using the appropriate forms, you should be receiving payments from the IRA, too. Contact the bank or other trustee holding the IRA to determine whether you're the legal beneficiary of the IRA.
