Cashing an Estate Check

My mother-in-law received a small settlement check from her deceased husband's claim, but it was made out to the estate in his name, "in care of" my mother-in-law. She is having problems with this check. Is there a simple solution?

The check can be endorsed and negotiated by the legal representative of the estate. Your mother-in-law will have to weigh the costs of going through the probate process against the amount of the check. She can find out the former by contacting an attorney.
