My mother was murdered a few years back, and I was wondering about looking for some old savings accounts that she had set up for me and my siblings at various banks. How would I even start that? I have a rough idea of the banks the accounts were with, but besides for that, I have no idea.
The best recommendation we have is to write a template letter explaining what has happened and that you believe your mother has an account in her name, or for you and your siblings, at that institution. Customize the letter to each bank and include identifying information such as full names, addresses and the last four digits of your Social Security number to see if they can find a match.
Be sure to check with your state to see if an account may have been inactive and escheated to the state. You would then claim your funds with the state.
