Opening an Account in Name of Deceased

Can I open a bank account in my mother's name after she has died? I have an insurance check and I would like to cash it, but it's written out to her. How can I cash it?

The check needs to go through the estate, the executor, and an estate account. These may already have been put in place. If not, they should be, depending on the size of the estate and your state laws.
