Finding Accounts of Deceased Child

How can a parent find out if a deceased child (age 28) had any money in the bank? Noone seems to know where she cashed her checks and I would like any money there to go towards her funeral expenses; she had no insurance. We live in Michigan.

If you are the executor of the estate (regardless of the size of the estate, some appointment can be made) a notice of your child's death with that evidence can be sent to the financial institutions in the area with your question. Provide a name, address, date of birth and a Social Security number or an option to contact you for that. If there is an account found, ask if any insurance was associated with it. Sometimes insurance is tied to an account.

Lastly, after a period of inactivity, state laws (which can vary) require the holder of funds to escheat any monies to the state. Your state will have a list of all these accounts. Again, proof that you are excutor of the estate would be needed to get those funds. This wouldn't happen for probably three to five years, so it won't be of assistance for the funeral.
