'Collecting' on My Deceased Mother's Account

What kind of trouble can I get into for collecting on my deseased mothers account? There is only $1000 in it. The fees will cost more than she has. Can I transfer funds to help pay for the funeral, since there was no life insurance, and she was a widow with no assets? Will the bank really do anything for such a little account?

Contact the bank to find out if it can take advantage of a state law that could allow it to pay out funds from your mother's account to the funeral home, or to a next-of kin. Many states have laws that permit smaller decedent accounts to be paid out with proof of death and certain other documentation.
