My mother recently died and left all of us her CDs, either as POD or beneficaries or joint owners. The attorney is asking us to turn the information over to her. Do we have to do that? We think she is just trying to make more money and we are trying to save as much of Mom's estate as possible.
A final tax return has to be completed for your mother, and the attorney needs information on those accounts as of your mother's date of death to complete that return. She may also be trying to help each of you to get the accounts changed over to your respective names on bank records. Rather than wonder about her motives, simply ask how the information will be used; you are owed an explanation for the request.
