Person Dies Abroad: Beneficiary Needs Info

I am an Indian. I have a friend who had a relative (also Indian) in the USA, who had a checking account. While on a visit to India, this person passed away. The legal heir would like to know what the procedures are for claiming the money.

Start by contacting the bank where the account is and let them know of the death. It may well be that the account has instructions as to what will happen, a co-owner who will have possession, or you can ask the bank what they need and what you can offer. In the US, an executor takes over and acts in place of the deceased.
