Tracking Down Old Accounts

My aunt died in '88. My uncle was awarded her property. How do I get a history from the two banks and four accounts? The State of California has not recieved the monies. What should I do since my uncle asked me to look into it?

If the state has no record, and your aunt died more than twenty years ago, there isn't much hope. The banks had an obligation under state abandoned property laws to surrender the accounts if no one claimed them. The period of inactivity that triggers surrender of abandoned property varies widely from state to state, but even back in the early 1990s, five years is probably as long as any state would have allowed.

Banks are not required to keep records of closed accounts forever. If those accounts were closed out in the early 1990s, there is very little likelihood that the banks still have any record of them.
