Endorsing Checks as Executor of Estate

I was the executor of my late father's estate. I am in receipt of a royalty check made out to him, and I have no idea what to do with it. Can I endorse it "John Doe, Jr., executor of the estate of John Doe, Sr."? Will a bank cash it?

If your appointment as executor is still effective, you could use that format to endorse the check. It's likely that a bank would require you to deposit the check into an estate account, rather than cash it.

If the estate has been settled and closed, you may need to reopen it with the clerk of the probate court in order to have your appointment extended before negotiating the check. If you believe future royalty checks may be expected, contact the issuer to have the rights to those royalties transferred to you or a third party.
