Getting IRS Checks Reissued

My twenty-seven year old son died on 10/8/09. In his effects was an IRS refund check. After his death, another refund check was issued to him. I have been trying to reach the IRS and the Treasury Department to find out about getting the checks reissued, but without success. Can you tell me where I might inquire about getting the checks reissued?

If an administrator or executor has been or will be appointed for your son's estate, that person may endorse the checks in the form of "[signature], [executor/administrator] for estate of [your son's name], deceased." A bank would ordinarily require that such a check be deposited to an estate account.

If no administrator or executor has been or will be appointed, Treasury Department regulations require that the checks be returned to the authorizing agency (in this case the IRS) for a determination regarding to whom the checks should be reissued. For that purpose, you should locate the IRS local office, if possible.
