I found an account of my father's from 1993 at the Bank of Boston. How can I find out if it is still active?
There are two avenues to follow. The first involves inquiring about the account at Bank of America, successor to Bank of Boston. If the account has not seen activity since 1993, you're very unlikely to turn up anything there.
The other option is to inquire of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts Treasurer's Office, which is the custodian of abandoned property. Accounts that remind idle for several years in the state, have to be surrendered to that office, but remain subject to legitimate claims by the account owners or others with an interest in the funds.
Start with this website, which is cooperatively managed by the abandoned property administrators of most of the states. There, you will find links and claim research tools that may prove helpful. There is also contact information for the Office of the Treasurer of the Commonwealth.
