My father passed away early in 2004, and I was the executor of his estate and the sole beneficiary. The estate's been closed for at least five years, but I found two $100 savings bonds. How do I cash these?
If you are named as beneficiary on the bonds themselves, you should have no problem cashing them. Produce a certified death certificate for your father, and proper identification as the POD beneficiary, and your bank should be able to redeem the bonds for you.
If you aren't named on the bonds, you'll need to contact the probate court to find out if it will issue a current certification of your appointment as executor. In essence, that would reopen the estate for the purpose of redeeming the bonds. You'll need to bring that certificate and a certified copy of your father's death certificate, plus personal identification, and the estate's taxpayer ID number to the bank.
