No Property, Assets, Accounts or Will: Cash Check?

My ex-husband passed away without any property, assets or bank accounts that we've been able to find. He left no Will, no power of attorney, etc. Since there is no property/money, there is no estate. His employer gave our son his last paycheck. Can my son get this cashed and keep the money? If yes, what does he need to do to get it cashed?

The check can't be cashed except by your ex-husband's estate. It's unlikely that the check will cover the costs of someone getting an appointment to administer the estate.
