I am settling an estate. I have gone over the Will and the trust documents. There was an additional signer on the safe deposit box, who died twenty years ago. The other signer that I am representing died two months ago. What do I need to do to get into the safe deposit box? I have both keys.
If you are the legal representative of the estate of the last surviving co-lessee of the box, you should be able to access the box after providing appropriate documentation. Bring a certified copy of your appointment by the court and, to be on the safe side, a certified copy of the individual's death certificate. Make sure you also have the keys and your own personal identification with you. Once the bank has accepted those documents, you'll stand in the shoes of the last lessee, and can access the box, remove contents, and when you no longer need the box, close it out.
