Intestate: How to Obtain Account Info?

My mom passed away without a Will (NJ) I know she had a bank account. How would I obtain the beneficiary information on this account?

If you know she had a bank account, you know which bank holds it. Obtain a certified copy of your mother's certificate of death and take it with you to the bank. If you can identify the account, you can ask if you may have been named as beneficiary on it. If you were, the bank can work with you to get the funds from the account transferred to you.

If someone else was named, the bank will probably tell you so, but would not identify who that person is; however, there's a chance it might tell you in an effort to contact that individual. If no one was named, the bank can tell you whether it is able to release the account funds to you as next of kin. That usually depends on state law and on the balance in the account.
