Depositing Check Payable to Deceased Father

My father passed away almost six years ago. His only assets were life insurance policies and annuities of which my siblings and I were the beneficiaries. We closed all of his bank accounts several years ago.

Last week we received a check from one of the insurance companies made payable to the estate of my deceased father. How do we deposit this check? Can one of us deposit it into our bank account? We never went through probate because there weren't any assets besides the insurance and annuity.

The check can only be negotiated by your late father's estate in its present form. Six years is a long time for a payment like this one to be delayed, so the insurance company should realize that even if there had been a probate of the estate, it would have been completed by now. Ask the insurance company to re-issue the check to one or more of your father's heirs.
