Frozen Account and Pending Fraud Claim

I was the POA for my grandmother. She had a checking account on which my aunt was a signer. In September of last year my grandmother told me that I could withdraw $650 from her account, which I did on November 4. She has since passed away. My aunt didn't notify me, the bank, or anyone else that she had died. Yesterday, my personal account became frozen because my aunt filed a fraud charge against me for the $650. I gave my bank a copy of the POA, but they won't unfreeze my account. Is this legal for them to do? How do I go about getting my account unfrozen?


Start by discussing the problem with your aunt. It appears that she has some interest in your grandmother's account. Perhaps she is the personal representative of your grandmother's estate, or was a joint owner of the account. In any event, she appears to be the driving force behind the bank's action to freeze your account, so you need to convince her that your grandmother's power of attorney gave you the authority to withdraw the funds. Once she's convinced, she can withdraw her fraud allegation at the bank, and your funds should be freed up.
