My mother has recently died. She had a joint bank account with her granddaughter who is twenty years old. My mother's husband closed this joint account and placed the funds into his bank account. Should the bank have allowed this transaction? What do I need to do to get this money where it properly belongs?
If your mother's husband had a power of attorney that permitted him to move those funds, he could have done this without question. The account itself may not actually have been jointly owned by her granddaughter. It may have been an individual account on which her granddaughter only signed. Whether the bank acted properly or not cannot be said without knowing more, which would mean reviewing the documentation for the account and any paperwork used to complete the transfer of the funds.
