If I am not a U.S. citizen and do not live in the U.S., can I open a checking account in a U.S. bank?

There is probably a small number of banks in the U.S. that might be willing to open a checking account for a non-resident alien. Any bank that does so would want a good explanation for why such an account makes sense for you to open. The bank will also have to be able to get and verify your identity information.
