Account has Another Name: Can't Get Funds Now

I opened an easy saver account with A & L about twenty years ago. I forgot about it until I recently found all my old account books and paperwork. I opened the account in another name, as all you needed was a library card back in those days. I recently tried to withdraw the money and was told I needed some identification. Obviously, I have none. I have all the original paperwork and account books, along with share checks and the name of the person who originally opened the account. I can prove I owned the property where the account was set up. Please can you advise me how can I withdraw my money?

You are inquiring about an account in the United Kingdom, and we aren't able to advise you with any specificity. It's generally quite a stretch to assume that a bank would honor such a request of an individual who can't provide documentation of his or her identity that shows him or her to be the individual who opened an account so long ago. Keep trying to work with bank representatives to see if there might be some way for you to verify to the bank's satisfaction that you are entitled to the funds.

In the U.S., funds left idle and unacknowledged for so long a period would in most cases have been surrendered to the state treasurer's office as abandoned property. If the UK has similar laws, often referred to as laws of escheat or escheatment, your money may have been turned over already. In that event, the law will determine whether you have any right to reclaim the funds.
