Getting Status of Foreign Account

I had an account with the Allied Building Society when I stayed in Pietermaritzburgh. I still have my account details. I haven't used the account since 1989, and want to know the status of it. Can I get this information from somewhere?

Our brief session of Internet research suggests that Allied Building Society became Allied Bank of South Africa, and that Allied Bank may have been merged into another regional banking company. Whether there are any vestiges of the building society's records that might lead to information on your account is not known. Our experience with U.S. banks is that it's often impossible to track down information on an account that has been effectively ignored for over twenty years.

South Africa appears to have laws on the surrender of abandoned property to the state. If you have friends in the country, perhaps one of them could do a little informal investigating for you.
