In a large international transaction in which one bank intends to send a wire transfer to another bank, what is the purpose of the sending bank first sending a pre-advice notice to the receiving bank?

Such a message would ordinarily be used to ensure that all details as to routing, etc., of the transaction are correct and that the intended beneficiary maintains an account relationship with the beneficiary's bank, or can otherwise obtain the funds from that bank.
