Bank Won't Accept Endorsement or POA: What to do?

I have a joint tax return check issued by the US Treasury with my name and my wife's name. My wife lives in China and I live in Texas. I mailed the check to my wife in China to endorse the check and she mailed it back to me. Even with the endorsement, the bank won't let me deposit it into my acccount. I couldn't add her name to my account, because she is not here in the US, and she is waiting for a Visa. What should we do? I asked the bank if they are willing to accept the power of attorney granted by my wife that describes the Treasury check (date, amount, check number) and authorizes me to deposit to my account. The bank also refused to accept this. Can you tell us what to do? We are very desperate. Do you know any bank that will work with us to help deposit the check? We are willing to provide any proof the bank requires.

Your bank is not compelled to accept the check for deposit or to accept your wife as a depositor. A check cashing business would probably not accept it either, since there is no way for anyone to verify your wife's endorsement or the validity of her power of attorney.

Whether another bank in your area would be more accepting of the endorsement or power of attorney, is not known. Contact one or more of those banks to explain the situation and ask if it or they would accept your business. Failing that, you could contact the IRS to find out if there is any way the check can be reissued in your name alone or the funds direct deposited to your account.
