I endorsed a check but I left the Pay to the Order of line blank, that was to be filled later. Somehow that check was negotiated and deposited to an account. My bank has stated that it's not fraud because it's like writing it to 'cash' since it was not made payable to anyone. I understand that it was negligence on my part for leaving the Pay to the Order of blank, however, Am I not entitled to know who cashed the check? Evidently, I have been told no. Just so you know, the cancelled check shows no name was filled in the Pay to the Order line and it only have the bank stamp on the back of it. There are a lot of numbers I am certain those numbers include the bank account it was put in. I have not gotten the assistance I need in this issue, the bank will not help identified who is the recipient of the fund and my bank says they are not obligated to help. The company the check was sent to is very interested in finding out the name of the negotiator to make sure it's not one of their employees. In my opinion from the bank perspective I thought it would be in their best interest to use this case to make sure their employees are adhering to their standard operating procedures, they keep telling me it's an expensive lesson to learn. Shouldn't the bank ensure that there is a name on the payee line and that it is signed? Are there any recourse? By the way the check was only for $90.00 it's not worth the time but I feel like I should know who take money out of my account.

If the check was cashed, the bank may not ever be able to figure out who got the cash. If it was deposited, the sequence numbers and other information on the back of the check should allow the depositary bank to figure out who got credit. If your bank and the depositary bank are not the same, your bank is not in a position to help you, and the depositary bank has no obligation to do so.

You'd be wise to tuck this episode away as valuable experience, and move on.
