I live in Illinois and do computer work at home for many different companies. My latest client paid with a Citibank check located in Miami FLa. My bank put a 48 hour hold on it...ok no big deal. An hour later the bank called and said the branch manager changed her mind since the check was from out of state and placed a 10 day hold on my meager $2300 pay check...funny thing on the front of the check it states VERIFIED FUNDS
Banks lose money on deposited checks frequently. While you say a "meager $2,300" that isn't a small loss, and with a few of those you have a large loss. Holds are not uncommon, nor is the notice to you.
They can absolutely change their mind and place a hold for longer. They will generally notify you in writing. Also, writing VERIFIED FUNDS on the face of a check means absolutely nothing. I could write that on my check but it doesn't actually guarantee that there are funds available to back it. Make a practice of asking the teller to verify the date that the funds will be available to draw against.
