My company had two outgoing company checks stolen, altered (payee changed)and cashed. I have received copies of the cleared checks. The copies are excellent, but I see no endorsement identifying the bank of first deposit. I contacted our bank, they state that the only way to determine the bank of deposit is by "source of receipt". This may take 3 to 6 months.

We believe that these two checks may have been stolen from our company mail room. Since the checks should have been through two internal mailrooms in different two different states before being sent, it would be very helpful to know where the check was cashed. This would help limit the scope of our internal investigation.

Is there an easier way to determine what bank cashed the check?

Is there a way to determine who owns the account that the check was deposited into?

Any help is appreciated.

contact your bank, preferably someone at an officer level, explain the situation, and tell tehm you need the source of receipt. It should not take 3-6 months, the Fed can provide this information in 3-6 minutes. Sounds like someone is giving you the run around. Have you filed a claim with your bank that the payee was altered and asked them to return the items?

There should be an endorsement stamp on the back of the check somewhere, as all checks that go through a bank processing dept and get this endorsement. It may be faint and may not copy, but it should be there.

If what is reported as the back of the check is entirely blank, I betcha they only made a copy of the front of the check and not the back?

Also, these items can be retured and your bank should do so. 3-6 months sounds awful strange to me. You may be dealing with someone that needs some more knowledge and I would speak to someone in management about returning these items.

Lets us know how you make out.

I would suggest speaking with the person responsible for your account. Next, I would speak with the person responsible for fraud.

The time frame you described is not realistic.
