I have a dilema I paid community credit union 3-4 years ago and about a year and a half ago we went to go open a account and the bank said i never paid so my husband and i went up there and paid again and now we moved to the middle of no where went to go open a new account and guess what i should up in the chex system.The bank is saying i never paid them. and the bank of texas only held the receipt for 1 year..Now what do i do? my husband says just go pay it again but now it's a matter of humilitation and determination!!!

The answer to your question varies greatly depending on the method of payment to the bank. If you paid with cash and don't have a receipt there is very little recourse. However, if you paid with a credit card, or a check from another institution, there will be a record of payment somewhere. Also, is it the bank that is saying they were never paid, or is that what has been reported to chex systems? Often times the bank may have failed to report the payment to chexsystems. Thus, chexsystems reports an unpaid charge-off when it may actually be a case of the bank not updating the information. Either way, chexsystems will keep the report on file for a period of 5 years, whether or not it was paid.
