I went to a local bank and was told I could not open an account, due to something reported in Chex System. They gave me a form to fill out and send in, I did. It came back clear as a bell, what gives?

Have you applied for 3 or more bank accounts within the last 90 day period? Some banks will refuse an account based on this information.

No, I've been at one bank for a long time, but wanted to change my account to a smaller locally owned bank, where I have my car loan. I was SHOCKED. You would think they would want me to have my account there. Do you suppose that chex system tells banks one thing and when you question it, they tell the consumer another..just a thought

There was no negative information on the report, and no inquiries?

Show the report you received to the bank and ask them what gives. I suppose a person at the bank could have been given incorrect information, or they misunderstood what was told to them.

Ask them to check again. If negative information again comes back, ask them to read your report to the operator and ask the why the difference, while they are still on the line. The operator has no authority to do anything you will need to talk to a supervisor if there is a difference.

I had an instance where I wrote a merchant a check to pay for a purchase and the check insurer indicated that I had no account at the bank I wrote the check on. I questioned this and the merchant was kind enough to let me use their phone to talk to them. They went so far as to say they called my bank and was told I didn't have an account there.

My response was that a 8 Am in the morning I know for a fact there was no one in the bank to even answer the phone. These people will flat lie to you. I finally got a supervisor who admitted they did not call but that they would, and find out what the problem was. I called back in an hour and was told I still didn't have an account. I told her I was now standing in the lobby of my bank with the operations office who said she never called them to verify anything on my account.

I went over the bank name and routing number with the check ex supervisor and found out that there system was showing a different bank for the routing number of my bank. She did make the correction to their system, and I finally completed my purchase. The fact that I knew more about the banking system than the insurer alowed me to counter their misrepresentation and was the only thing that saved me from a protracted mess. (Plus maintain my cool)

It took a half day to get this squared away and If I followed the requested procedures it probably would still be an issue.

They do make mistakes. Good Luck

Good thing you knew a thing or two. I had no idea about any of this kind of stuff. I got my report back yesterday from Chex System and there is not one Bad thing on it in any of it's catagories.

Do you have any credit at all? I know you mentioned a car loan, but not all banks report car loans to the credit bureaus. The lack of a credit history can give you a negative score with ChexSystems as well. Some banks will take this into consideration while others will not.

Anon, you cannot check before going to a bank. However, you should know. If a bank has closed your account account in the past 5 years for abuse, overdrafts, or similar activity, you may assume you have been reported to them. Also, if you have bounced checks at retail businesses that you have not paid, you will also be in ChexSystems.

Some banks use Chexsystems with a credit score. If you don't "hit" the minimum score, they decline the account. I used to work for a major bank in the West who required that you have a score of 550 or better to open the account.

The original poster may want to review their credit score as well.

From a non-banker ...

Just to be sure ... did you count the number of inquiries within the last 90 days to be sure there aren't more than 3? If you've been declined an account because of ChexSystems within the last 60 days (I think it's 60), you are entiled to a free copy of your report ... I would make absolute sure.

ChexSystems

Some large banks do use credit score in addition to ChexSystems, but if they had used your credit score, they would have been required to tell you that.

I would wonder what's up as well.

One of my friends was refused an account locally. When she looked into it, someone with the same name had some bad checks, etc. She got it cleared up. It almost seems to me that they have SOME information and attach it where they THINK it belongs.

There is no link between a credit score and ChexSystems. Chex is a consumer reporting agency, not a credit bureau.

The number of inquiries may result in a declination but are they for savings accounts or checking accounts?

Many people these days look for savings banks and open accounts in the hope they go public and issue stock.

Understand that no financial institution has to remove you from ChexSystems, even if you make restitution. You can remain in the system for up to 5 years.

Here's the (non-banker's) response to ChexSystems/EFunds:

Once you are reported, you are in there for 5 years, period.

Some (and very few) banks will consider removing the entry once the debt is paid. Most banks, however, will not remove. (I have heard that is because Chex makes the bank sign a contract saying they will not remove unless the entry was incorrect for some reason.) Your best bet when looking for a bank (while in Chex, and maybe when not), is to check out www.chexvictims.com Read about the experiences others have had with the banking industry and learn how to protect yourself BEFORE you open the account!

My 2 Cents...

Well, here's a banker's response.

Don't overdraw your account and if you accidentally do, pay the overdraft immediately. As such, this is something that you will never have to worry about. It falls into the realm of "personal responsibility".

Contact your bank directly to arrange a repayment of your overdraft. It's the best place to start.

FYI, here's a list of banks that do not use ChexSystems: http://www.creditservicer.com/nonchexsystemsbanks.html,

It may be possible to open an account at one of these banks even if you are blacklisted by ChexSystems.

We seem to get a lot of Chexsystems questions here that all amount to the same things:

1) Why am I there?
2) How do I get it cleared up?
3) Is there any way I can still open a checking account?

Maybe we could get a sticky thread put in "Ask a Banker" concerning this and the basics about it? Or could this be construed as BOL promoting a service?

Believe it or not, many bankers realize how confusing, frustrating, and difficult it is for people to work their way through the ChexSystems maze. We understand how many people get into trouble through simple ignorance about how to handle an account, or through circumstances beyond their control. That's why many banks participate in a program known as "Get Checking."

Get Checking is is a national financial education program designed specifically to help consumers have a second chance to establish a primary banking relationship and gain access to mainstream financial services.

The program is currently available in 102 markets across 21 states with 64 community and educational organizations.

Get Checking guarantees program graduates can open a checking or savings account.

Click here to see if Get Checking is available in your area.

Good luck!

I'm sorry to have to correct you, but it is 5 years. Here is a quote from the ChexHelp website:

How long does the report stay on file? How do I get it deleted?

Each report submitted to ChexSystemsSM remains on our files for five years, unless the bank or credit union that filed the report requests its removal or ChexSystemsSM becomes obligated to remove it under applicable law.

If you do have a record with chexsystems but you have cleared up the account there are some banks that will go ahead and allow you to open an account if you can present a letter or receipt from the previous banking showing you have taken care of all your debt with the bank. That might help you find a bank in your area that would be willing to open an acct with your current record.

That was a silly response as it is the presumed logical one and may or may not apply. I found out today that I am in Chex systems. Why? Because I moved and opened up a new account with the same bank (new state) When I made changes to my creditors that I have online pays with, they erroneously applied ALL payments to the old account resulting in over $400 in overdrafts. They didn't forgive the overdrafts. Even though I PAID the money good old B of A listed me in Chexsystems because I closed that account. SO please refrain from Knee jerk response and "in the box" thinking when you may not know all the information.

The "Silly Response" was to the banker who said that to avoid going to Chex Systems by not having overdrafts.
