Hi, i'm doing my A level coursework on online banking and it would be of a great help if people could tell me why they bank online, or if you don't bank online, why not? thanks! it's much appreciated!
I do bank on-line for several reasons, mainly because it is easier, cheaper, and quicker.
Easier in the fact that I can bank when I want to bank and not be restricted to certain hours. Cheaper since I don't have to buy stamps anymore or spend my time and gas driving to the branch or ATM. Quicker because I don't have to wait in lines at the branch and I can do all my bills at one time.
I hope this helps you for your paper. Also, if you search on Google for On-line Banking research, you can find tons of studies that have been done that may help you.
I bank online for many of the same reasons that TX does. I personally like not buying 8-10 stamps each month. I also don't always have time to take care of my banking business (even though I work in a bank), and online allows me to manage my finances more efficiently.
You don't have to go back that far to know that all banking business used to take place at the bank. Even balance inquiries were handled at the teller lines. Over the years and with advances in bank products such as personal lines of credit, ATM machines and universal internet access, most banking business is taking place outside of the bank. It's good for us because we don't have the cost of cleaning the carpets as much, and it's good for the consumers because of the convenience of doing their business at home. We'll make the services available because we save money and consumers will use the services because they like the convenience. It's a wonderful win-win situation.
I feel more confident that a payment was received, compared to if I mailed it. I agree with everyone else about not having to buy as many stamps, and not having the time to go to the bank during business hours.
Like many of the others said, you can: -
Do your banking anytime,
Pay bills at little or no cost,
Set the system once to pay re-occuring bills (loan payments),
Verify when checks have cleared,
Download statements to accounting software,
Electronically retrieve checks,
Inquire via e-mail about other services,
Compare rates-terms, etc. from multiple financial institutions,
Transfer funds from [your] other account if you see the checking account balance is getting low,
Save paper from having statements mailed,
Not worry if your statement is going to be taken from the mail box.
etc.
Just to be different I don't bank online. I'm one of the last people on earth to not have internet at home. Call me old fashion, I still like writing out checks.

I hate writing checks. I have carpal tunnel and my hand cramps after three. Also the merchants get their payments faster on-line than if I mail them, so I can hang onto my money longer.
I can set up reoccuring payments, like my mortgage and my childcare, on my schedule. Daycare is every Friday. I don't have to take my purse in when I pick up the kids and all of their junk.

Oh yeah, I had forgotten about daycare. That one had to be paid every darn week and my husband was forever forgetting to take in the payment when he picked up our daughter. We set it up on bill pay and didn't have to think about it again until she finally went to school full time and we changed the amount!

Because you can check your bills that have cleared, while the process is a little less timely to wait for a statement or get a statement from the teller.
Also because it is faster and easier.....definitely more convenient than going to the branch.

1. Easier 2. Faster 3. More reliable than US mail 4. Safer than US mail 5. More convenient to do my banking during non-banking hours (ie. 3:14 AM) 6. Can track account levels and activities at my convenience 7. Cheaper than buying stamps and envelopes 8. Repeating payments can be set up automatically, without worrying about being late

I will go on-line to check my balances and the activity but I will NOT bank on-line. Too many computer geeks that can hack at my $4.05 balance I don't want to give it up to them that easily. I do use the internet at home and work but do NOT transact any business with personal account information over any of them. Another dinosaur holding onto checks until I have to give them up. I am keeping the cash letter folks employed. HA And the techi hackers to go elsewhere.

Like most of the others said - convenience, control (I manage my bank accounts to the penny, ensuring that I can earn interest right up until I schedule a payment).
Also, here in the US, as that is where ALL (I believe) of the above responses are from, on-line banking can be used to avoid paying for cheques. In the US a book of cheques is an expense that customers pay for, not a freebie given away by the banks (as in the UK). Of course on-line banking also saves the postage, and avoids the risk of the cheque getting lost-in-the-mail.
Good luck with your assignment - from a British Expat!

Online banking sure beats paying ridiulous amounts for stamps... It is probably because of online banking being so popular now that they feel the need to raise stamp pricing.... If only getting gas was as easy as online banking...... I would sure go for a cheap gallon of gas now a days!
I have online banking. I do not use the bill pay system though. I either pay my bills with my debit card, or drop them by the place they would be going anyway. That way, I know the payment gets there. With my credit card bills, I do pay those online via ACH... I know that if I tried to mail a check it would never get to the mailbox, and I just don't want to do the bill pay thing.

Yes, online banking is convenient, Except I wish it could be like an ATM too, where we could make a withdrawal, and the cash would slip out of a slot in the computer!

It once took me an hour twice a month to pay my bills by laboriously writing check after check. Now it takes all of 3 minutes - and the speed & ease makes it so that I can easily use it to split payments evenly, so that I don't have one "good" paycheck, one "bad" paycheck. pay half the phone bill now (2 weeks early) half later, etc. Or even split it up but schedule both payments for the same time - but I go ahead & take account of the 1/2 payment in my register so that i don't spend it. Also, nice to have a single place to look and see "Did I pay them already? How about this opther bill, did I already pay it too, etc."
