Hello - I just received a refund check made payable to a firm that no longer has a checking account (I closed the account as part of the wind down process post merger, ie we sold the firm).
The check is payable as follows:
Company X
c/o My Name
My Street
My City, My State, My Zip

My question is, can I deposit this into my personal account or do I have to return the check to the issuer and try to get them to make the check payable directly to me?

"c/o" is part of the mailing address; you are not the payee of the check and cannot provide a legitimate endorsement.

If, according to the terms of the sale, the check belongs to you rather the new owner, ask the drawer to reissue the check in your name. Assuming the name of the firm is unchanged, you might also try the simpler route, delivering the check to the firm, asking them to deposit it and issue a check to you for the amount due.

Okay, I will try to get it reissued. The firm the check is made out to no longer exists so I can't really take it to them to get cashed, I was the last adminstrator of the companies liabilities and assets.
