I work at a retail establishment and today I turned down a check for over $1000 of electronics because it appeared to be fraudulent.

I noticed that the check number to the far right on the bottom (after the routing number and account number) did not match the check number in the top right.

The check number in the top right was 2455, but the check number in the bottom right after the routing and account number was 245555.

Out of curiosity I just wanted to ask - is there any way that check could have been legit? Those numbers should be identical shouldn't they?

No offense is intended, but I don't believe that you will receive a response to this as if could be construed that you are trying to find out how to counterfeit checks. I would suggest that you have your security department contact your local bank or the bank the item was drawn on for verification.
