Charging for Credit Report

This isn't a true banking question, but I thought bankers would know the FCRA better than anyone. I just applied for an apartment rental where they charged me for and then pulled a credit report on me. Am I entilted to a copy of the credit report? and how much can they charge me? Thanks!

A fee can be passed to you for the cost of the credit report. The cost of the report can vary from landlord to landlord and may be based on their overall relationship with that credit report provider.

I am not aware of any law prohibiting a landlord from "upcharging" this cost, but that doesn't mean there isn't one. A local realtor could likely answer that question for you as it would pertain to your state laws. Upcharging is a fee they would add for their time and technology needed to obtain and review the report.

The FCRA doesn't address these issues, which means they're not prohibited there. This then, addresses both the ability to pass the cost to you, and the amount of the report.

If you are denied a product or service they can discuss the report with you. They could give you a copy and they could just talk to you about it, but they are not required to do this. They should provide you with some form of adverse action. This would allow you to contact the report provider and obtain a copy from them. This is the preferred way to do this because they you can ask questions and seek corrections of erroneous information from knowledgeable staff.
