My wife has excellent credit history while I have horrible credit. We want to get a home loan, but my terrible credit history would most likely hurt us. What would be the pros and cons if we only got the loan in my wife's name as to avoid the problems with my bad credit?
This is common. With a loan in just your wife's name, she must qualify based on all the debts she has (even joint ones with you), but just her income. This is often a limiting factor in the house you'll be able to afford. Depending on your income and debts, that may or may not be a factor.
You may still be asked to sign loan documents as they pertain to the collateral. You shouldn't be asked to sign on the loan itself.
