Suspected Identity Theft: What to do?

Is there a way to find out if someone has opened an account in my name that I do not know about?

You'll have to know where, and ask. If it is a loan, it may be that it is reported on a credit report. You are entitled to one free report annually from each of the three major credit reporting agencies. Get one at a time, each four months, to get a continual feed of information. You can search on more ID theft topics here on BQ.
