Account for Incapacitated Individual

My seventeen year old son was just approved to receive SSI. We received the first check made payable to me for him. We thought we could just add our son to our checking account, where we wanted the money deposited. The bank says we have to open a separate account titled with my name for my son. Is this correct?

You should have received paperwork from the agency approving your son's SSI payments that described how a representative payee should manage those funds. Because the money belongs to your son, not to you, you are supposed to keep the funds separate. Published on BankingQuestions.com 6/04/09
