My mother recently passed away and she was conservator for my handicapped brother's account. Is there any way the bank will allow another family member to have access to it? I am in the process of having my name put on his disability check.
If your mother was a court-appointed fiduciary for your brother's funds, the bank will recognize a court appointment of another person and turn the account over to him or her. On the other hand, if your mother was a representative payee for your brother under procedures of the Social Security Administration (SSA), the bank may turn the old account over to you and change its titling or it may be reluctant to do so. You may need to ask the SSA to intervene.
