I received an email message from PayPal saying that its security program detected attempts to use my account from a foreign address. The message went on to tell me to click on a link in the email if I had not tried to use PayPal from a foreign coountry. When I clicked on the link to report that it wasn't me trying to access my PayPal account, I noticed that the website address that appeared in my browser didn't quite look right. Besides, the page that appeared asked for my login information to report the fraud. Something told me not to go any further. Was my intuition right?
Yes. Would it surprise you to hear that people who have never used PayPal got the same email? It was and is a scam, designed to dupe unsuspecting PayPay users into supplying their PayPal login information. That could be like handing a crook the keys to your credit card account and bank accounts, too! You were very astute to notice the suspicious web address in your browser.
PayPal will never ask you to supply login information when you're responding to an email. To be safe, never to click on a link in an email. It's smarter to type the web address you know into your browser. It may take a few extra seconds, but save you a bundle!
