I need some direction. I have a PayPal account. I discovered that a sizable sum of money had been transferred to an unauthorized account. I called PayPal and reported the fraud. I did not hear any updates so I called them again. The rep told me a refund was in progress and should be completed in 48 hours. I waited the required time, but no refund was made.
I called again and was told the $500 withdrawal would be credited to my account by end of the business day and another would be refunded by end of business several days later. Well guess what, the $500 has not refunded to my account and we are well beyond their stated deadline.
Is there somewhere I can turn to for help with this? I am totally distraught. I have not told my husband that this has happened. It would worry him sick. The total withdrawn is $8,000 which may not be much to some, but is a lot of money to us. Any advice would be appreciated.
The PayPal site indicates the states it is licensed in, as to providing services in the U.S. That page is listed here and I would recommend first calling PayPal and asking for a supervisor, and second at the agency licensing them in your state. If your state isn't listed, I would call my local Better Business Bureau and/or the state attorney general. One of these may be able to assist you, or refer you to someone else.
It is important for you to learn why PayPal has admitted default but not credited your account. If they feel the security was compromised by you, they may be more hesitant. Knowing why they are slow will help you with any supervisory agency you contact.
