I got an email from the FBI today. They told me they were monitoring my internet use, and that I had been accessing some illegal websites! When I calmed down from being angry about FBI snooping, I thought maybe my kids had been messing around with my computer, so I figured I'd see what else the FBI had to say. They asked me to answer some questions on an attached document and fax it back to them.
When I opened the attachment, my virus scan software sent me an alert and told me the message contained the w32/sober virus. Did I dodge a bullet?
That was a close one! Be thankful your virus detection software caught it, and you can relax, the "bullet," as you called it, didn't come from the FBI. They weren't monitoring your internet use (they have bigger concerns, trust us!), and they didn't catch you or anyone else using your computer on illegal websites. What you got was a scam email designed to infect your computer with a virus that would spread itself to everyone in your email address book.
Want some advice?
Don't open attachments to emails you aren't expecting.
Keep an antivirus program current running on your computer.
Before opening any email attachment, be sure to have your antivirus program check it out (if it doesn't happen automatically on your system).
