Account Exceeds $200,000: Insured?

I know that my account can be insured by the FDIC for $200,000. What if I have a huge check? What do I do with it?

Actually, the current Standard Maximum Deposit Insurance Amount for FDIC coverage is $250,000. Joint account owners each have that amount of coverage. Contact your bank. There are decisions you can make that will provide you with much more than $250,000 in deposit insurance. One of the options you could consider is the CDARS (Certificate of Deposit Account Registry Service) system. If your bank participates in CDARs, you could get access to insurance coverage of up to $50 million. That's probably huge enough for almost anyone.

You can take a look at CDARS on its website. You can also use the site to identify a local participating bank.
