I requested a new loan at a bank and they turned me down. I am upset about it because they said it was based on bad credit. I have no bad credit. Who can I complain to?
When you were turned down and told why, the lender should have also told you where this credit information came from and how you can review it and correct it if it is wrong. The Credit Reporting Agency where this came from will provide you with a free copy of your report. This is in addition to any any other free copy you are entitled to. You can review the report and ask the CRA about discrepancies. They will investigate these for you in an effort to get the right information on your file. Mistakes do happen, especially when names are similar, addresses are similar or data was input wrong, such as a Social Security Number.
Once corrected, you should go back and reapply for credit, pointing out to the lender what was corrected. If you still want to complain about the lender, the notice they provided you telling you about your request, should have the contact information to their regulator on it.
