My daughter and her ex roommate had a rental deposit refund made out to both of them. The roommate will not sign it. How long is the check good? If it's not ever cashed, can we request after 6 months time it be voided and ask the property management company to send a check made out to our daughter for just her portion of the deposit refund?
There's no definite date beyond which a check isn't good, but a bank may refuse to pay a check that's more than six months old. If your daughter will be satisfied with half of the rental deposit, and her former roommate continues to be uncooperative, we'd suggest asking the property management company to stop payment now and reissue two separate checks.
