My grandaughter received a check for her birthday. My daughter says she can't cash it because it's in her daughter's name. Can't she have the grandaughter sign the check, then my daughter sign it, and cash it at her bank?
Depending on the amount of the check, what happens most often is mom or dad deposit the check into their own account after explaining to the teller that this is their child and for what the money was intended. Memo lines often have "Happy Birthday" noted as well, and mom or dad should be able to show the child's Social Security card.
Better yet, the money could be used to open a savings account in the child's name, with one or both of the parents. This is a great time to start teaching their child how to save a little money, and maybe have fun with some as well splitting it 50/50 or 60/40 or whatever seems reasonable.
