College Student wants Own Account

I have a bank account, but my parents are the custodians of it. They refuse to sign it over to me. It is under my social security number and I am paying taxes on it, but I can't access it. Is there any way I can get this account in my name? I'm in college and I don't want my parents to see that I have a bank account.

You can open a separate account under just your name, if state laws allow this. In some states a bank won't do this until you have reached the age of majority. In other states even a minor can open an account. There may be some limitations or stipulations.

The account you have now sounds like it may be a Uniform Transfer to Minors Account (UTMA). In that case you are the owner, but your parents administer the account. Taxes on the interest are your responsibility, but you don't have any control until you have reached the age of majority. If you have, you may inquire with the bank, and your parents, why these funds have not been reassigned.
