Seventeen and Needs His Own Account

I am seventeen years old and I am wondering if there is anywhere I can get a bank account without having my mom be on it. She used to have two accounts. One with me and one with my stepfather, and when her account with him was overdrawn and checks were bouncing, they ended up taking $400 out of my account, since her name was on it and I never saw it again. That is why I want my own account, so this won't happen again.

Whether or not a bank will open an account for a minor is influenced by state laws and by the bank's policies. Some states specifically provide for such accounts, some don't, and there are several different types of restrictions that some states place on such accounts. Some banks adhere strictly to state laws; some will open an account for a minor even without state law support, and some won't open an account even if state law permits it. In short, there is a real mixture of bank policies on the question. Try making some calls to banks and credit unions in your area and just ask them.
