Cashing Old Money Orders

Going through my deceased mother-in-law's papers, we found two $500 money orders that she purchased on 12/17/2002. They were never cashed. We tried to cash them at our bank and they were returned from the issuing bank because of a "stale date". Do we have any recourse for collecting the $1000?

It's possible that the issuing bank has surrendered the funds from those money orders to the state, under Abandoned Property laws. Start at www.missingmoney.com, which is a website maintained by participating state agencies in charge of abandoned property. It will not cost anything to search lists of abandoned property using the site. You will also find contact information for participating state agencies in case you need to refine your search somewhat.
