I have a tenant in one of my rental houses who mailed me two money orders for rent and I never received them. Is it possible to stop payment on money orders and re-issue them?
If the money orders were issued by a bank and signed by a bank representative, they were "bank money orders," which are legally not subject to stop payment order. However, in most states, the purchaser can obtain a refund for a lost bank money order 90 days or more after the original money order was issued.
However, if the money orders were purchased elsewhere or signed by the purchaser, they are "personal money orders," and a stop payment order should be accepted. U. S. Postal Service money orders can be replaced if lost, stolen or destroyed.
