I received a money order in payment of merchandise for $665.00. The amount in figures says $665.00, but in words it says "Hundred sixty-five". What should be correct amount? Can I collect on this fraudulent money order?
On a money order that has two statements of the amount to be paid, one in numerals and the other in words, when those statements don't agree, the legal amount is the amount in words. It's possible that the money order was actually issued for $165, and the numeric amount was added incorrectly or was altered to $665. If the money order is worth anything, it's only $165. You appear to have been shorted $500. You should follow whatever procedure you would use if a customer failed to pay you for merchandise, or gave you a bad check.
