I cashed my check at my bank. They sold me money orders for bills. The bank called me later that day to say that the teller gave me too much money back, so they put stop payments on two of the money orders. Is this possible?
Yes, it's possible. The bank is trying to get you to come back and reimburse them for the extra cash it gave you.
Hopefully, you have a record of the check amount and the money orders you bought, as well as the amount of cash you got back. Ask the bank to explain the error and to tell you how much you were overpaid. Then, assuming that the bank is correct, repay the bank the overpayment, and ask that the stop payment on the money orders be released.
For the future, if you continue paying your bills with money orders, have the teller provide you with a machine tape of the transaction, showing the amount of your paycheck, with the amount of each money order and the money order fees subtracted. Then verify the cash you get back against the tape.
